Generative Engine Optimization, GEO for short, makes sure AI assistants name your company in their answers. This covers ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and the AI overviews in Google Search. For you, that means: anyone looking for a provider and asking an AI gets your name and a link to your page.

What does Generative Engine Optimization mean?

A “generative engine” is a search engine that does not show a results list but writes an answer. It reads several sources, summarizes them and names some of them. GEO means preparing your own content so that such a system finds it, understands it and takes it over.

In everyday use, the English abbreviation has caught on. GEO has nothing to do with geomarketing or local search.

What this means for your company: An AI answer usually names only a few providers. Whoever is there gets compared. Whoever is missing does not.

Where does the term come from?

The term comes from research. In 2023, a group around Pranjal Aggarwal published the paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”. The authors examined which changes to a text lead to AI search systems citing it more often. Among other things, they compared quotations, source references, statistics and clearer language.

Since then, agencies and vendors have used the term, often with different meanings.

What this means for your company: Ask every provider what exactly they mean by GEO and how they measure success.

GEO, SEO and AEO: What is the difference?

The three terms overlap strongly. They differ mainly in what you end up with.

TermWhere you appearWhat you get from it
SEOIn Google's results listVisitors who click through to your page
AEOIn direct answers at the top of Google or in voice assistantsYour answer is read or read aloud first
GEOIn answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and othersYour company is named as a provider and linked

The three build on each other. Many AI assistants look for sources through classic search engines. When to start where is described in our guide SEO or GEO. The view from the language models' side is explained in LLM SEO.

What this means for your company: Good SEO is not wasted money. It is the foundation on which GEO works.

Why GEO is becoming important now

More and more people put their questions directly to an AI assistant. In B2B, buyers and managing directors ask things like: “Which agencies build websites with Next.js?” or “Who tests AI systems for security?” The answer names a handful of providers, often with a short description.

The model writes this description itself. If old or contradictory details about you exist online, it takes them over.

What this means for your company: GEO does not only bring mentions. It also makes sure a prospect gets the right picture of you before opening your website.

Checklist: Generative Engine Optimization for your company

You can tick off these points one after the other.

1. Know where you stand

  • Write down 20 to 30 questions your customers would ask an AI.
  • Ask these questions in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini.
  • Note who is named and how you are described.

2. Give answers an AI can take over

  • Every important service and every frequent question has its own page.
  • The first paragraph answers the question in two to three sentences.
  • Terms are explained clearly once.
  • Details are concrete: process, region, languages, who you work for.

3. Be readable for AI assistants

  • The AI providers may read your pages (the robots.txt file defines this).
  • Your services are described unambiguously so the AI reproduces them correctly (structured data exists for this).
  • Your pages load fast, on mobile too.

4. Be represented correctly elsewhere

  • Company name and services are consistent in directories and profiles.
  • Outdated details on other sites are corrected.
  • Trade articles, interviews or partner pages mention you on your topics.

5. Measure by the result

  • Re-run the question list every month.
  • Count visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sources.
  • Ask in the first conversation how the customer found you.

What this means for your company: Points 1 and 5 only cost you time and quickly show whether action is needed.

What GEO cannot do

GEO is not a switch that forces a mention. AI answers fluctuate from query to query, and each system chooses its sources by its own unpublished rules. Anyone who promises a fixed placement in ChatGPT promises something nobody controls.

What this means for your company: You steer what you control: how clearly your website answers your customers' questions and whether the details about you are right. Judge success by enquiries, not by individual answers.

Frequently asked questions

GEO means preparing your website so that AI assistants such as ChatGPT name your company when someone asks for a provider.

No. Many AI assistants look for sources through classic search engines. Without good SEO, your page is found less often and therefore named less often.

Often a few weeks, once new pages are known to Google and the AI providers. You only get into a model's learned basic knowledge with a new model version.

That depends on how many services and questions you want to cover. The stocktake from point 1 is a good first step to clarify the scope.

No. GEO here stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Local search engine optimization is a topic of its own.
